Dry needling is when a practitioner inserts multiple filiform needles into your skin. Filiform needles are fine, short, and solid stainless steel/ They are not hollow so fluids are not injected into the body. That’s why the term “dry” is used for this treatment.
The needles are placed in “trigger points” in your muscle and scar tissue. The points are areas that you feel or have been told are knotted, which are hard muscles that feel like squishy marbles.
Dry needling helps release the knot and relieves muscle pain and spasms. The needles will remain in your skin for a short period of time, typically 15 minutes.
Q: What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling?
A: Dry needling is more focused on the musculoskeletal system, trigger points, and scar tissue treatment. Acupuncture is focused on clearing up blocked meridians and restoring chi through balancing the system.
Q: Does it hurt?
A: Typically you will only feel a pinch, but you can feel pain in an inflamed trigger point. When you do feel pain the doctor will count to 5 with you and after a decision will be made to remove the needle, but by this time the majority of the pain is gone and the needle can be left.

A: The needles used in Dry Needling are much smaller than your traditional medical venipuncture needless. They are sterile disposable needles, that are usually 0.16mm – 0.3mm thick and 1.5 cm – 6 cm long in size. The choice of the needle depends on the depth of the trigger point within the tissue, and on the dry needling technique that is used. They are also filiform because they are solid and not hollow like typical venipuncture needless.
Q: What side effects can I expect after the treatment?
A: Most patients report being sore after the procedure. The soreness is described as muscle soreness over the area treated and into the areas of referred symptoms. Typically, the soreness lasts between a few hours to two days.
Q: What should I do after having the procedure done?
A: Our recommendations vary depending on the amount of soreness you have and on the individual response to the treatment.
Recommendations may include applying heat or ice over the area, exercise, adjustments, or modification of activities.
Q: How long do the needles need to be left in for?
A: Research says 15 minutes. It is very important to be as still as possible during the procedure because the movement can cause the muscles to contract with the needle inside your muscular system which can be painful. It is not uncommon for the doctor to pull out the needle slightly for your protection and giving you peace of mind to relax in certain areas before leaving the room.
